Duncan Creek Elementary CS100 Award Recognition
Duncan Creek Elementary School recently received the prestigious CS100 Award. This honor, presented by CSisElementary and CSforAll, acknowledges elementary schools dedicated to teaching computer science (CS) to every K-5 student. At Duncan Creek, every student is given the opportunity to participate in a Computer Science special. In this class, students learn the fundamentals of how computers operate, laying the groundwork for more advanced coursework they will encounter in middle school.
Robotics Team Achievements
Moreover, the school’s robotics team achieved the highest ranking among FLL teams in GCPS. The team proudly secured 2nd place in the state competition and earned an invitation to a national tournament.
Extracurricular Activities
In addition to their robust academic programs, DCES offers a variety of extracurricular activities through numerous clubs. These include the FLL Robotics Team, Technology Club, Running Club, Art Club, Tumbling Team, Singing Hawks Chorus, and Student Council. The Student Council is selective, admitting only those students who demonstrate strong character, leadership, and service.
Duncan Creek STEM Education
Furthermore, every student at Duncan Creek Elementary is provided the opportunity to engage in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) special. In this class, they learn and apply the engineering design cycle. To enhance their learning, all students maintain a STEM journal in their classrooms, documenting connections between science and math.
Literacy and Kindness Initiatives
In an effort to promote literacy and kindness, Duncan Creek Elementary invited Stan Tucker, known as “Stan the Man,” to present assemblies to the students. In addition to these grade-level assemblies, Mr. Tucker visited each classroom to engage directly with students. Impressively, over 200 students completed the 36-item Kindness Challenge.
Community-Building Events
In a community-building initiative, Duncan Creek Elementary celebrated the achievements of the Mill Creek High School state champion football players with a parade through the school hallways. Upper grade math teachers collaborated with the high school players to present football-themed math problems to students, enriching their learning experience. Additionally, first grade students attended a dress rehearsal of Mill Creek theater’s performance of “Cinderella,” and former Duncan Creek students, now Mill Creek seniors, paraded the halls in their caps and gowns, celebrating their academic journey. It is truly great to be a Mill Creek Hawk!
Field Trip Opportunities
For the first time since the pandemic, all students at Duncan Creek had the opportunity to go on various field trips, both within the local area and to other exciting destinations.
Duncan Creek Elementary PBIS Recognition
Lastly, Duncan Creek Elementary was recognized by the Georgia Department of Education with Operational status for its implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in the past school year. PBIS promotes positive behaviors by recognizing students who exhibit appropriate school conduct, further contributing to the positive school environment.
