Peachtree Elementary School History

Peachtree Elementary School traces its roots back to the historic Peachtree Path, an Indian trail connecting North Georgia to Atlanta’s trading hub. Founded on January 6, 1971, at Peachtree Corners in Norcross, the school emerged as a solution to the burgeoning student population, relieving overcrowding at Norcross Elementary School.

Initially, the first two grades attended Norcross Elementary until Peachtree’s completion. The school’s unique architectural design, fostering open-space team teaching, distinguished it as a pioneering institution in Gwinnett County. Principal Brooks Coleman spearheaded this innovative approach, setting the stage for a dynamic educational journey.

From its inception, Peachtree embraced a vibrant community spirit, with students selecting the panther as their mascot and blue and peach as their school colors. The sterling leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Wise as the inaugural PTA co-presidents set a tone of collaborative engagement.

Throughout its evolution, Peachtree witnessed transformative milestones, including expansions to accommodate a burgeoning student population. Under Principal George Thompson’s stewardship, individual, self-contained classroom teaching methods replaced team teaching, heralding a new era of pedagogical approach.

In subsequent years, Peachtree garnered accolades for its academic excellence, earning distinctions such as the Georgia School of Excellence and National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Noteworthy initiatives, including a School-Within-A-School structure and literacy collaborations, underscored Peachtree’s commitment to nurturing student success.

As Peachtree’s legacy unfolds, its enduring ethos of respect, responsibility, and caring continues to define its character. The transition of leadership, from Maureen DeLoach to Kathy Eichler, and later to Jean Loethen-Payne, Dr. Beverly Smith, Kara Dutton, and Gretchen Runaldue, has upheld the school’s tradition of excellence.

Peachtree’s integration into the International Baccalaureate Organization as an IB World School in 2010 marked a significant milestone, reinforcing its commitment to a globally-minded curriculum. Additionally, the school’s strong partnership with families and the community, recognized with the Georgia Family-Friendly Partnership School award, has been instrumental in fostering student achievement.

As Peachtree Elementary embarks on its journey into the future, its enduring dedication to educational excellence and community engagement serves as a beacon of hope and promise for generations to come.
