Margaret Winn Monfort Holt, a lifelong resident of Lawrenceville, entered the world on September 26, 1924. Her parents’ home was located just one block from the courthouse square. Her lineage is traced back to Elisha Winn, revered as the founding figure of Gwinnett County. Elisha established his residence in Dacula in 1812. It was in his parlor that the inaugural elections in Gwinnett County took place in 1819. Winn personally designated the county seat’s geographical center. Laying the foundation for the town now known as Lawrenceville and contributing to its street layout. Elisha Winn played a pivotal role in the town’s establishment and also initiated the Lawrenceville Academy for Boys in 1824 and the Female Seminary in 1836.
Early Years
As the Valedictorian of the Class of 1941 at Lawrenceville High School, Margaret Winn Monfort Holt began her journey of academic excellence. She distinguished herself as a member of the region championship teams in both basketball and track. Her talents extended beyond sports, earning state honors in debate, theater, drama, art, and music.
Achievement
In 1945, Margaret achieved another milestone by becoming the second woman in the history of the University of Georgia to be named Valedictorian. She graduated with a BA in Political Science, receiving honors in English and Spanish. Her exceptional academic achievements led to her selection to prestigious societies such as Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, and Phi Kappa. During her time at the university, Margaret actively contributed to campus life, serving as Vice President of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Following her graduation, she dedicated herself to teaching and imparting her knowledge of English and Spanish at Lawrenceville High School. Margaret’s commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. She coached the girls’ debate team and made history as the first female girls’ basketball coach in Gwinnett County.
