Who was Daniel Therrell

Daniel McLaughlin Therrell, born on September 18, 1868, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, began a life characterized by service and dedication. He entered into matrimony with Marie McKay Gates on October 29, 1890, in Wilmington, North Carolina, and together they raised a family of four sons and two daughters. Settling in Atlanta, he commenced his professional journey as a special agent for the Southern Bell and Telegraph Company.

Notably, Mr. Therrell’s legacy is intertwined with his esteemed tenure on the Atlanta Board of Education. His first appointment to the board commenced in January 1924, spanning four years, followed by a second term from January 1934 to 1936. However, it was his longest stint with the district, spanning from January 1940 until his final year of service in 1953, that left an indelible mark.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Therrell exhibited unwavering dedication to the welfare of Atlanta’s children and educators. His advocacy saw the passage of several bond issues, underscoring his commitment to ensuring adequate educational resources for the city’s youth. Notably, his efforts were driven not by personal gain or acclaim, but by a genuine concern for the educational needs of the community.

Beyond his role in education, Mr. Therrell was esteemed as a multifaceted individual, recognized for his talents as a writer, inventor, and business executive. However, it is his embodiment of true friendship that remains a cornerstone of his legacy, endearing him to board members and employees alike.

In remembrance of Daniel McLaughlin Therrell, we honor his enduring contributions to education and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of his community.
