BFA Overview
Ben Franklin Academy (BFA) is a progressive, independent high school dedicated to preparing students for college and beyond. Our curriculum is rigorous and college-preparatory, tailored to accommodate each student’s unique learning style, needs, and interests.
At BFA, we prioritize individualized instruction and mastery learning, recognizing that many of our students have not thrived in traditional educational settings. Here, students find a supportive community where they forge deep connections with their teachers and advisors, work in environments that foster their best efforts, and develop into responsible, self-directed individuals ready to excel in higher education and beyond.
As a non-profit, non-sectarian institution, BFA is accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS, now part of Cognia) and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). Our high school serves grades 9 through 12, with a deliberate emphasis on maintaining a small enrollment of around 120 students annually.
Our Mastery Learning Curriculum ensures that students achieve 90% proficiency in each course before progressing to the next level. We offer a variety of instructional sessions, including Morning and Afternoon Sessions with Work-Study options, as well as longer day options from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
With a low student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 4:1 in the Morning Session and 3:1 in the Afternoon Session, students receive personalized attention and support. Our lunchtime and after-school clubs and activities cater to diverse interests, including philanthropy, environmentalism, gaming, robotics, SAT/ACT preparation, drama, arts and crafts, and more.
For student athletes, aspiring entrepreneurs, and musicians, our flexible programs accommodate practice, performance, and work schedules. BFA offers instruction in six foreign languages and boasts a comprehensive array of Advanced Placement and honors courses, with 25 options in each category.
