Why it's called Lost Mountain

The name "Lost Mountain" originates from an ancient Cherokee legend. According to various versions of the tale, a chief's daughter becomes lost in the woods surrounding the mountain. The chief, overwhelmed with grief, spends the remainder of his days mourning her disappearance. In remembrance of his daughter, he names the hill "Lost Mountain," as it is the location where she was last seen.

Why it's called Powder Springs

Powder Springs acquired its name from the unique geological phenomenon within its vicinity. Seven mineral-enriched springs within the city limits give rise to water that darkens the surrounding sand, resembling gunpowder. This distinctive characteristic prompted the city's renaming in 1859. Initially incorporated as Springville 21 years prior, the city's new name reflects the remarkable natural feature that sets it apart.

Does Lost Mountain qualify as a mountain?

Lost Mountain does not meet the commonly accepted elevation threshold of 1,000 feet for a mountain summit. Therefore, it is classified as a hill rather than a mountain. Despite this distinction, Lost Mountain stands out due to its unique isolation and distinctive features
