Baggett Elementary School – History

In August 2015, a new chapter in education unfolded as Baggett Elementary School welcomed approximately 1000 students, previously slated for Alford, Benefield, and Ferguson elementary schools. Erected at a cost of $15,776,603, the school boasts 71 instructional spaces, catering to a capacity of 1,125 students. Guiding this educational endeavor was Dr. Charlotte Sadler, formerly the principal of Parsons Elementary School, selected as Baggett’s founding principal. The school proudly bears the name of Boyd Q. Baggett, a distinguished former Gwinnett principal.

Mr. Baggett’s journey in Gwinnett County began in 1948 at Bethesda School, followed by stints at Lawrenceville School and Central Gwinnett High School. His pivotal role in the county’s educational growth led him to serve as an assistant to the school superintendent, focusing on teacher recruitment amid Gwinnett’s educational expansion.

Under Dr. Sadler’s leadership until June 2020, Baggett Elementary School laid a solid foundation, marked by excellence in reading, writing, and mathematics. Pioneering initiatives included one-to-one technology integration, a dedicated STEM classroom, and multiple computer labs.

Following Dr. Sadler’s retirement, Mr. Mitch Green assumed the mantle of principal in July 2020. Mr. Green, previously at the helm of Georgia’s first STEAM-certified school in a neighboring district, brought a wealth of experience. Under his stewardship, Baggett intensified its focus on STEM and STEAM education, enriching the curriculum with arts integration. A cadre of five dedicated arts educators now spearheads programs encompassing Visual and Media Arts, Music Technology, Theatre, and Dance.

Expanding beyond the classroom, Baggett embraced outdoor learning, fostering scientific inquiry through aquaponics, hydroponics, and trout rearing. Greenhouses, gardens, and a nature trail further enhance the school’s immersive educational environment. Transitioning towards Project-Based Learning and daily STEAM integration, Baggett offers students holistic learning experiences.

In addition to academics, Baggett students benefit from a robust on-campus athletic program featuring basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, and soccer. These endeavors not only promote physical wellness but also foster a sense of community among students, families, and educators alike. Through a commitment to innovation and collaboration, Baggett Elementary School continues to nurture a generation of lifelong learners poised for success in an ever-evolving world.
