Barber Middle School – About Our School

Murray F. Barber Middle School commenced its educational journey in the academic year 2005-2006, located in Acworth, Georgia. The school’s inception aimed to alleviate the overcrowding predicament at nearby Awtrey Middle School (AMS), redrawing attendance zones to accommodate approximately 850 students. Barber Middle proudly serves a socio-economically and ethnically diverse student body, standing as one of the five middle schools in Area 5, funneling students into North Cobb High School.

Catering to a broad spectrum of student needs, Barber Middle School offers specialized programs for students with special needs, gifted students, and advanced placement math students. Embracing the ethos of a “school within a school,” students are organized into teacher-teams for academic classes, with a plethora of options for non-academic subjects such as art, dance & drama, technology education, and instrumental and vocal music. Furthermore, students partake in physical and health education.

Our faculty champions several priorities and objectives, anchored in student achievement, stakeholder input, and the latest education research. These include enhancing student mastery of mathematical problem-solving skills, elevating proficiency in reading and expository writing, and fostering a culture of collaboration to nurture student learning within a safe and supportive environment.

Murray F. Barber: A Legacy

The naming of newly constructed schools in the Cobb County School District undergoes a formal process overseen by the school board, wherein nominations are submitted to a committee of stakeholders. Following deliberations, the committee recommends a namesake to the School Board, who ultimately decides the school’s appellation.
