he Burgess-Peterson Academy garden, in collaboration with the Education Committee of the East Atlanta Community Association, is committed to fostering a love for fresh fruits and vegetables among the children of East Atlanta and Reynoldstown.
Teachers, administrators, parents, and neighborhood volunteers unite to promote the cultivation of healthy, organic produce and to empower students with the knowledge of sustainable gardening practices. The garden encompasses three distinct areas:
Raised garden beds located in the school’s spacious courtyard.
An orchard situated behind the school.
An outdoor classroom nestled within a wooded section of the school’s property.
Lessons conducted in the garden are thoughtfully aligned with the school’s curriculum and educational objectives. As students engage in hands-on gardening activities, they learn about plant life cycles, soil composition, and environmental stewardship. Tasks such as clearing old crops and harvesting sunflowers provide valuable opportunities for experiential learning.
The courtyard garden features a butterfly garden, designed to attract beneficial insects that aid in pollination. The orchard boasts a variety of fruit trees, including pomegranate, paw paw, figs, and jujube, offering students a diverse range of flavors to explore. Additionally, the outdoor classroom provides urban children with a unique opportunity to connect with nature, learn about indigenous plants of Georgia, and appreciate their historical significance.
At the heart of the Burgess-Peterson garden is a commitment to nurturing both plants and minds. By cultivating an appreciation for gardening, students not only develop vital life skills but also gain a deeper understanding of the natural world around them.
