At GCPS, our school counselors are dedicated to breaking down barriers to students’ academic success and fostering a secure environment. We achieve this by offering developmentally appropriate counseling services rooted in best practices.
STANDARDS
Our standards are guided by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets and Behaviors, which align directly with Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy and more broadly with Mathematical Practice. For states that have not adopted the Common Core State Standards, counselors are encouraged to align competencies with their respective academic standards. Our standards and competencies are organized into three categories—academic, personal/social, and career—and are tailored to specific grade levels.
SERVICES PROVIDED
At our school, counseling services are tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students through the following avenues:
Classroom Core Curriculum Lessons: These lessons cover personal/social, academic, and career development topics and are delivered to all students.
Individual Student Planning: Personalized assistance with goal formation and planning is provided on a one-on-one basis.
Responsive Services: This includes brief counseling, crisis intervention, problem-solving, and peer mediation. For mental health counseling needs, we refer families to community counseling resources.
System Support: We offer school-wide programming, consultation with school and community professionals, and support for students and their families.
Individual Counseling:
Students can access individual counseling sessions through referrals from teachers, parents, administrators, or peers, or through self-referrals.
Students utilize their agenda book as a pass to visit the counselor’s office, and counselors maintain an open-door policy. In the counselor’s absence, students can complete a Note to the Counselor form and leave it under the door for scheduling.
Sessions may address expressing feelings, problem-solving, designing action plans, and academic counseling, with follow-up as needed.
Small Group Counseling:
Counselors organize and lead small group counseling sessions focused on building resilience and providing support for students facing similar challenges.
Students can be recommended for small group counseling by various stakeholders or through self-referrals, with sessions typically lasting four to six sessions based on student needs and schedules.
Small groups typically consist of four to six students.
Classroom Core Curriculum Lessons:
Lessons are delivered through Social Studies classes and cover topics such as counselor introduction, getting along with others, career awareness, and high school preparation.
Additional topics are addressed as needed or requested by teachers.
Crisis Situations:
Counselors provide classroom support or individual counseling in response to crises impacting students or staff, with follow-up sessions as necessary.
School Wide Programs:
We offer advisement initiatives like “Crews Kind,” promote a culture of inclusivity through “No Place for Hate,” and provide support for students with economic needs through the Care Team.
