duluth middle school – Device Policy

DMS “Away for the Day” Device Policy

With the implementation of 1:1 Chromebooks, there is no longer a need for students to use cell phones or other electronic devices for instructional purposes. The “Away for the Day” policy is designed to create a safe and distraction-free learning environment.

Expectations for Students:

  • By 9:15 am, students must silence their phones, tablets, and earbuds, and store them in their bookbags. These devices should remain stored until bus call begins at 4:00 pm.
  • Phones, tablets, and earbuds should not be visible or in use during the school day.
  • If a student needs to contact home, they may do so from any school office phone.

Consequences for Non-Compliance:

  1. The teacher will ask the student to hand over the phone, tablet, or earbuds.
  2. The teacher will label the device with the student’s name and deliver it to the grade-level office. Parents will be notified.
  3. Parents have the following options:
    • Pick up the device the same day (No student consequence).
    • Allow the school to hold the device until 4:00 pm the next day and return it to the student then (No student consequence).
    • Choose after-school detention for the student, and the device will be returned to the student by the end of that day.
  4. If a student refuses to comply with the request, an administrative referral will be written for failure to follow directions.

Title I

Title I is a federal initiative designed to allocate funds to schools and districts based on the proportion of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Its aim is to ensure equitable access to quality education and resources, facilitating students’ attainment of state academic standards.

These funds support various initiatives, including:

  • Teacher salaries to enhance the student-teacher ratio and enable personalized instruction
  • Staff development and planning time for educators
  • Extended learning programs
  • Acquisition of classroom technology
  • Procurement of teaching materials, both consumable and non-consumable
  • Compensation for presenters and childcare providers at parent workshops
  • Provision of materials and resources for the Parent Center
  • Facilitation of enriching learning experiences for students

All decisions regarding the utilization of Title I funds are made collaboratively, with input from stakeholders during the school’s Title I Planning Meeting and Documents Review Period, as well as other opportunities for parent input. Stakeholders contribute to determining workshop topics, budget allocation, Parent Center resources, and the development and assessment of Title I documents based on data analysis from end-of-year parent surveys.
