Additional Program Information
Comprehensive Counseling Program:
At Grace Snell Middle School, our counseling department is recognized for its comprehensive and data-driven approach to supporting students. We earned national recognition in 2014 through the American School Counselor Association’s RAMP (Recognized ASCA Model Program) Award submission. This acknowledgment highlights our commitment to addressing student needs, supporting academic journeys, and focusing on post-secondary and career options.
Our counselors utilize school data to identify areas requiring additional support to enhance student achievement. Through targeted interventions and supports, we aim to boost academic performance, promote positive behavior, and reduce truancy rates. By tracking school performance within the counseling department, we can tailor effective support strategies aligned with the school’s LSPI goals to enhance student achievement.
Mandated Reporting:
As mandated reporters, school employees are obligated to respond when a child reports possible abuse. Here are the steps to follow when reporting urgent child concerns:
Report concerns to the grade level counselor and/or assistant principal.
Follow up with the designated reporter to ensure a report is made to child protective services.
Remember, mandated reporters only need to have “reasonable suspicions” to make a report, not direct evidence, and they are guaranteed anonymity.
Making an Appointment:
Parents: Call or e-mail your grade level counselor to request an appointment.
Students: Students can request to see the counselor with a signed agenda or hall pass. Additionally, they can fill out an appointment request slip available in the grade level office.
Counseling Lessons:
Throughout the year, our counselors provide at least three core lessons to each grade level. These lessons are often integrated into science and/or social studies classes. All students receive core curriculum lessons covering School Expectations and Anti-Bullying, GCIS Career Pathways, and Child Lures. Parents can opt-out of the Child Lures lesson by signing a permission slip if desired. GCIS Career Pathways ensures that all students receive guidance on college and career readiness.
