Harper Archer Elementary School Prioritizing standards-based instruction is essential, with curricular resources deployed to ensure compliance with educational standards.
Incorporating problem-solving activities that encourage students to share their strategies enhances math instruction.
Utilizing manipulatives is a fundamental expectation across all math lessons to facilitate hands-on learning.
Employing Guided Math instruction enables teachers to form small groups based on students’ achievement levels and specific needs. This approach allows for detailed observation of student work, focused attention management, enhanced support for students who struggle, and additional challenges for those who excel.

Mathematics:

Teachers integrate literature into mathematics instruction using the Gradual Release Model, offering students practical applications of math in real-world situations.

English:

Harper-Archer Elementary School employs Pearson ReadyGen as the core curriculum for English Language Arts (ELA), supplemented by resources from Heinemann, FUNdations Phonics, Orton Gillingham, Write Score, Scholastic Books, and Achieve 3000.

Science:

Instruction is based on the Atlanta Public Schools units of study, supplemented by STEMScopes resources. Weekly science experiments and demonstrations are conducted in one of the HAES STEM labs. As part of the Science and Engineering Practices, students from grades 3-5 work on constructing arguments using Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning (C.E.R.). In contrast, students in grades K-2 concentrate on Claims, Evidence, and Examples (C.E.E.) to grasp how evidence supports explanations or claims. Methods such as these collectively enhance students’ ability to use evidence effectively in their reasoning and explanations.

Social Studies:

Social studies instruction follows several key principles. Firstly, lessons incorporate reading and writing to ensure a deep understanding of both the intent and the content of the social studies standards. Furthermore, writing instruction in grades K-5 aligns with the requirements of the Georgia Milestones assessments.

Additionally, preparation for the Social Studies Fair starts in early September. During this time, students from Pre-K through grade 5 participate and engage in various activities related to the fair. Consequently, these practices collectively support a comprehensive and effective social studies education.
