Counseling

Mission Statement

The mission of the Lewis Elementary School Counseling Program is to help students overcome barriers to learning by providing a safe and nurturing environment that promotes growth in academic, career, and social/emotional domains. Through a comprehensive and developmental program, Lewis counselors create the support system necessary to equip all students with the skills and knowledge for a successful and productive future.

Services

School counselors at Lewis Elementary are uniquely qualified to remove barriers to learning. We offer various services to address the needs of all students.

Counseling Core Curriculum Lessons

School counselors teach lessons to each class one to two times per month for 30-45 minutes, based on the American School Counselor Association’s Mindsets and Behaviors. Lessons are tailored to the developmental levels of our elementary students and cover three domains: academic success, career exploration, and social/emotional development.

Group Counseling

Our counseling department offers various small groups throughout the school year based on students’ needs. Referrals for these groups can come from parents, teachers, or counselors. Parent/guardian permission is required for participation. Groups typically meet for 30 minutes once a week for six to eight weeks and may include topics such as study/organizational skills, friendship/social skills, anger management, anxiety, grief and loss, and self-esteem. Individual Counseling

Sometimes students need individual counseling. These sessions, requested by students or referred by teachers or parents, typically last 15-20 minutes. Most situations are resolved within 3-4 sessions. If more support is needed, we may suggest group counseling or other recommendations. Sessions are confidential unless the student discloses harm to themselves or others, in which case we are legally obligated to report. Parent Consultations

Parent consultations with the counselor can be crucial for addressing a student’s needs, as parents are the primary influence on their children. The counselor offers unique insights into school-related issues and is available for appointments via call or email.

The Lewis School Counseling Program Should:

Address goals and objectives based on national standards and appropriate for K-5 students.
Focus on primary prevention.
Be planned and coordinated by the school counseling team, with collaboration from educators, parents, guardians, and community representatives.
Deliver services through classroom counseling lessons, small group and individual counseling, responsive services, and system supports.
Use school and community-based resources.
Utilize an Advisory Council to review and modify program goals, gather feedback, and discuss curriculum implementation.
Be evaluated annually by the school counseling team.
Use data to guide future program development.
Establish a framework for monitoring student progress.
