About Mableton Elementary School
Mableton Elementary School – Mableton’s Historical Journey
Two centuries ago, the lands that now encompass central Mableton were home to Sweet Water Town and Nickajack, two Native American Indian villages. Sweet Water Town perched on a high hill by Sweetwater Creek, near the junction of Old Alabama Road and Maxham Road, while the wigwam of Indian Chief Nickajack stood by a locust tree near where Nickajack Road crosses the Southern Railway.
The Cherokee and Creek Indians both laid claim to south Cobb County, but the swampy terrain along Sweetwater Creek and Nickajack Creek deterred any conflict over the lands.
The influx of white settlers into the Mableton area began in the early 1830s, drawn by the promise of land ownership. Through the Gold Land Lottery, the State of Georgia granted land to its citizens in 40-acre Land Lots. Title to these lots was awarded after the payment of a ten-dollar fee.
Mableton’s School Legacy
Mable School, the first educational institution in Mableton, was a private school established by Robert Mable, a pioneer resident of Cobb County. Housed in a two-room log cabin in front of the Mable House on Floyd Road, it laid the foundation for education in the area.
Subsequently, Fairview School emerged near the present location of the South Cobb Library on Mableton Parkway. However, it was soon superseded by Mableton School, established in the early 1880s.
Initially, Mableton School convened under a brush arbor at the corner of Church and Center Streets. Students’ families bore the cost of books, while those who could afford tuition paid ten cents a week. The school operated for two months in summer and six months in fall and winter, aligning with agricultural seasons.
The first public iteration of Mableton School opened in 1883, housed in a building owned by the Glore family. It later found a home in the First Baptist Church building, and subsequently, a purpose-built school structure was erected behind the church.
Disaster struck in 1948 when the Mableton High School building was destroyed by fire, leaving the community in shock. Yet, from the ashes rose a new Mableton School on the same site, with various buildings added over the years to accommodate the growing student population.
In August 2012, Mableton Elementary and Sky View Elementary merged to form a new, modern facility, symbolizing the community’s commitment to education and growth.
Gratitude is extended to Jean Burgess, Romanda Lee, and Bobbie McDonald for preserving and sharing this invaluable historical narrative.
