STEM
The term STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM Education aims to revolutionize the traditional teacher-centered classroom by promoting a curriculum driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploration, and active student engagement in finding solutions.
Traditionally, the components of STEM have been taught separately and often in isolation. However, by embracing the STEM philosophy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are integrated to form a cohesive whole. The inclusion of technology enriches the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics by offering innovative ways to tackle problems and apply acquired knowledge.
At Martin Technology Academy, concerted efforts have been made to establish a common understanding of STEM Integration among teachers. In 2014, MTA embarked on the journey to achieve Georgia State STEM Certification. The process involved an initial assessment by the state and the completion of a rubric before the final certification visit. MTA teachers have actively participated in a Science Endorsement cohort, adopted a school-wide Engineering Design Process (EDP), initiated the development of standards-based STEM Focus Problems at each grade level, and established a STEM steering committee. The ongoing objective is to invite the state for a follow-up review in Spring 2016.
MARTIN TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
MARTIN TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY OF MATH AND SCIENCE STEM FOCUS PROBLEMS
MTA STEM Focus Problems are standards-based challenges designed to guide students through the entire engineering design process. Students receive the problem at the outset of the unit, before learning any standards. Subsequently, the standards are taught conventionally, with teachers consistently referring back to the Focus Problem throughout the unit. Students comprehend that the standards they are learning across all subjects are essential skills for successfully addressing the challenge presented at the culmination of the unit. Once students have mastered all requisite standards, they engage in solving the Focus Problem utilizing the Engineering Design Process.
Stay tuned for updates as MTA staff continue to develop Focus Problems during the 2015 – 2016 school year.
Kindergarten Focus Problem 1 (August 4 weeks) – Every day construction companies face the challenge of selecting materials to build sturdy homes that withstand various weather conditions. The story of the three little pigs parallels this dilemma! Can you assist the third little pig in designing a house capable of protecting the family during different wind and weather conditions?
First Grade Second Grade Third Grade Focus Problem 1 (August 9 weeks) – Over the years, water and wind erosion have begun to affect the soil around our school’s playground and track. We urgently need your help to preserve and enhance our school grounds! Your challenge is to design an erosion barrier using recycled materials to halt erosion on our playground.
Fourth Grade Focus Problem 1 (August 6 weeks) – The Native Americans are in dire need! They struggle to hunt buffalo, essential for their survival. However, every time they approach, the buffalo flee! Your task is to design a catapult capable of hitting a target (the buffalo) from a safe distance away.
Fifth Grade Focus Problem 1 (August 9 weeks) – Despite Thomas Edison’s invention of artificial light over a century ago, a significant portion of humanity still lacks electricity. Your mission is to create a functional circuit capable of providing electricity to these third-world countries, initiating their journey out of poverty.
