Jackson High School Atlanta – History

Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School, formerly known as Southside Comprehensive High School, is currently celebrating its 33rd year of operation. In a pivotal move during the 2007-2008 academic year as part of the Atlanta Public Schools High School Transformation Initiative, stakeholders advocated for renaming the school after Mr. Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr., Atlanta’s trailblazing first African-American mayor. On June 16, 2008, the Atlanta Board of Education endorsed the renaming, officially establishing Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School.

The school’s inception traces back to the merger of Hoke Smith High School and Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in the fall of 1985. Under the stewardship of Mr. Charles Hawk, the inaugural principal, the school embraced its comprehensive nature, integrating the seven Career Technology components within its academic framework. Notably, during Mr. Joseph Carpenter’s tenure from 1991 to 1993, the school forged a significant partnership with General Electric (GE), resulting in various programs aimed at academic enrichment and support, a legacy that continues to this day.

Dr. William Shepherd assumed leadership from 1993 to 2003, a period marked by the school’s recognition as a Georgia Public School of Excellence in 1999. Dr. Shirlene B. Carter led the school from 2003 to 2012, overseeing the restructuring of the GE program and the introduction of Small Learning Communities aligned with the APS initiative.

In 2008, in alignment with the APS initiative, the school transitioned into several Small Learning Communities, fostering specialized education paths. Notably, under the leadership of Mrs. Stephanie Johnson from fall 2012 to 2014, the school underwent a transformative phase, achieving remarkable academic growth and facility enhancements. Mrs. Johnson’s initiatives propelled Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School to prominence, earning her accolades as a distinguished educational leader.

Today, Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School continues to uphold its legacy of excellence under the guidance of dedicated leaders and educators, shaping the future of its students and community.
