History
The Origins of Pinckneyville, Peachtree Corners
How did Pinckneyville get its name?
Pinckneyville Middle School pays homage to a rural farming settlement established in the early 1800s. This community evolved alongside the old Peachtree Road, adjacent to an ancient Indian trail. Initially dubbed “Turkey Gizzard” and later “Buzzard’s Roost,” the area eventually underwent a name change to honor Charles Pinckney, a distinguished visitor and early statesman hailing from South Carolina.
The Pinckneyville community thrived as a vital stop on the stagecoach route connecting Augusta and Alabama. Among its oldest structures were a post office and an inn, offering respite to weary travelers. Notably, Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, still standing on Spalding Drive, emerged as the inaugural church in the region, constructed circa 1826. Similarly, the Washington Academy, situated at the present site of Shiloh Baptist Church on Spalding Drive, became the area’s first educational institution. Another school, Crabapple Academy, was erected near the present Pinckneyville Middle School location, while the land encompassing the school was formerly an apple orchard owned by the esteemed Westbrook family.
Pinckneyville resides near Technology Park in Norcross, Georgia, at 5440 West Jones Bridge Road. Construction on Pinckneyville Middle commenced in May 1984, culminating in completion by fall 1985. With an initial 828 students and 40 classrooms, the school witnessed consistent enrollment growth thereafter. Additional classrooms were added in 1987 and 1989, followed by a substantial expansion in 1996, incorporating 17 new classrooms and a second gymnasium. The most recent expansion, comprising eight classrooms, was finalized in fall 2000. Pinckneyville is a vital component of the Norcross High School cluster, drawing students from Peachtree, Simpson, and Stripling elementary schools.
