About Luther Judson Price

Luther Judson Price was born on April 24, 1856, in Sunnyside, Georgia, on the Tye Plantation of his owner-father, seven years before the Emancipation Proclamation. His mother, Angeline Price, was of English, American-Indian, and African descent.

After the Civil War ended in 1865, Luther spent his boyhood on a farm in Sunnyside with his mother, older sister, and stepfather. Recognizing the importance of education and knowing he was not destined to be a farmer, Luther left the farm in his early teens and moved to Atlanta on his own. He worked his way through Clark University, majoring in business, and was one of the institution’s first graduates. The site where he attended is now Carver High School.

Luther purchased a store at the corner of Gammon Street and Jonesboro, near his alma mater. He operated this store for over 50 years, and although the building is now in need of repair, it still stands as a testament to his legacy.

On October 3, 1889, Luther married Minnie Georgiana Wright at the Gammon Theological Seminary, now part of the Carver High School campus. They lived above their store and raised five children—two boys, Luther Jerome and William Harold, and three daughters, Minnie Helen Price, Annie Mae Price O’Hara, and Miriam Eloise Price Allen. Eventually, they built a house at 75 Gammon Street, across from his business.

On June 18, 1889, Luther was appointed Postmaster of South Atlanta by John Wanamaker, the U.S. Postmaster General. He served for 25 years under several presidents and managed a post office within his store, serving both the white and African American communities. Luther was known for his high ethical standards and fairness, and he commanded respect from those around him.

In addition to his successful business, Luther and Minnie were active in their community and church. He served as the treasurer and Chairman of the Steward Board at the South Atlanta Methodist Episcopal Church and held various leadership roles in national Methodist Episcopal Church organizations and the Masons. A Republican, Luther advocated for greater civil rights opportunities for African Americans and was instrumental in voter registration efforts.

During the Race Riot of September 1906, Luther was accused by a white mob of selling ammunition to African Americans defending themselves. Thanks to his many friends who petitioned the governor for protection, Luther was safely escorted by police to the Fulton Tower until the riots ended.

Luther Judson Price passed away on July 3, 1936, at the age of 80, and is buried in the family plot at Southview Cemetery on Jonesboro Road.

The Legacy Continues…price middle school

In 2016, a family purchased the Price home to honor Luther and Minnie’s legacy. Jonathan, Kysha, and their two children transformed the house from an electric blue boarded-up structure into one of the most beautiful homes on the block. With the help of builder Jerry Davis, they created a space that pays homage to the Price family and contributes to the community’s heritage.

Their home features a community drumming circle, “The Chick-Inn” chicken coop, and outdoor learning spaces for their homeschooled children. They repurposed bricks from an old chimney to create a walkway that showcases South Atlanta’s history. The property also includes a community mini-library and a post box where visitors can send postcards of kindness.

Inside, the foyer is dedicated to Luther and Minnie Price, with family photos and history displayed. A small scale, believed to have been used by Luther during his time as Postmaster, is also on display. The home maintains many original features, such as the stair railing and some of the original flooring, while also incorporating modern amenities like heating and air conditioning. The kitchen, designed with a fruit and veggie stand, pays tribute to the Price’s General Store.

We are honored to experience and continue the legacy of Luther and Minnie Price.
