What is a Charter? – The Globe Academy
A charter school is an independently run public school granted greater flexibility in its operations in exchange for greater accountability for performance. The “charter” establishing each school is a performance contract that outlines the school’s mission, program, students served, performance goals, and methods of assessment.
The GLOBE Academy’s charter outlines our school’s goals and the milestones we aim to reach annually, as well as where we should be at the five-year mark. You can find general charter renewal information provided at our renewal stakeholder engagement session in February 2017 [here](insert link).
Why Do Charters Need to Be Renewed?
The charter renewal process allows the county to assess whether we are still meeting our charter commitments and provides an opportunity for us to update on our progress.
Duration of the Current and Next Charter
Our current charter is valid through the end of the 2017/2018 school year. The goal is to renew GLOBE’s charter for an additional five years starting in the 2018/2019 school year.
Timing of the Renewal Process
The charter renewal process must be initiated one year before the current charter expires. Our renewal application was submitted to the county on August 7, 2017. We will be interviewed by the county board of education in the fall, followed by a decision. Our application will then proceed to the state of Georgia for consideration, with a final response expected in Spring 2018.
Charter Renewal Committee
Our charter renewal committee consists of board members, administration, faculty, and select parents. This committee has diligently gathered the necessary documentation and information for the charter renewal and will continue to lead us through this process and keep us updated.

Filing the Renewal Documents
We expect to file our charter renewal by the August 2017 due date.
Core Elements for Renewal Reporting
Examples of criteria we will report on include:
- Progress against original charter goals
- Changes implemented compared to what was described in the current charter
- Plans for the next five years
